The Winchester Mystery House is a popular tourist attraction, especially around Halloween. It is located at 525 South Winchester Blvd. in San Jose, California. Tours offered include the mansion, garden, behind-the-scenes, firearms and antique products museum. Special flashlight tours are offered on Halloween and Friday the thirteenth.
Sarah Winchester Story
Sarah Winchester was the wealthy widow of William Wirt Winchester, owner of Winchester Repeating Arms Company. After the death of her daughter in 1866, Sarah sank into depression. After the death of her husband in 1881, it is believed, Sarah sought the advice of a medium.
The medium claimed that spirits placed a curse on the Winchesters because many of them had been killed by the munitions or weapons that Mr. Winchester manufactured at his company. The medium, then told Sarah to go west. It is believed that the medium instructed her to build a place for the spirits to reside and the spirits would let her live.
