They lost friends and colleagues in the ill-fated raid and many of them never saw their home in Canada again. To pay tribute to those who perished and to make sure they will never be forgotten a Royal Canadian Engineers' Memorial stands alongside the town's Memorial to those who died in World Wars I and II and the Merchant Marine Memorial which honours those who gave their lives in the Merchant Navy.
The Canadian flag flies proudly above the Memorial and the annual service is organised jointly by Newhaven Town Council, the Canadian Veterans' Association of the UK and the Royal British Legion.
The Parade to the Memorial is led by a piper, a band and the Canadian Veteran Standards. These are followed by the Standards of the Royal British Legion and branch members. The local Newhaven and Seaford Sea Cadets bring up the rear.
