Commuters in London faced a struggle getting into work today as rail workers stage the first in a series of 24-hour strikes. Rail travel is disrupted across the city as trade unions fight for job losses they claim will compromise safety. Around 800 jobs are threatened as the UK’s coalition government prepares spending cuts to tackle Britain’s record budget deficit.
Members of the national union of Rail, Maritime and Transport workers (RMT) and its sister union, TSSA, began the walk-out at 9pm on Monday September 6, 2010. The shutdown of London’s extensive tube network is expected to last throughout today Tuesday September 7, 2010 but the knock-on effect is anticipated to be felt into tomorrow’s rush hour too.
RMT, which represents more than 80,000 members in the UK’s transport industry, including underground rail workers, is expected to announce more strike dates between today and end of November 2010. According to the Daily Mail, each day of strike is expected to cost the capital an estimated £50 million.
